Particularly, 4chan has two faces with various boards and their own specific content and guidelines. Restriction is not possible (except for staff).
4chan was launched on October 1, 2003; it was molded on Japanese image-boards, particularly Futaba Channel. The site’s first boards were originally used for posting pictures and discussing manga and anime.
Therefore, in no time, the site became very popular, expanding its coasts. Also, it now features boards dedicated to a wide variety of topics, from anime/manga to video games, music, literature, fitness, politics, and sports.
The website has linking to an internet Subcultures and activism groups, such as Anonymous, the alt-right and project Chronology. Also, users of this site have been responsible for the formation or promotion of Internet memes. More especially, lolcats, Rick rolling, “Chocolate Rain”, Pedobear and m any more.
Particularly, the site “Random “board, also known as “/b/”, was the first board they create on the platform, and it receives the most traffic. The random board has minimal rules on posted content.
Basically, users of 4chan are instrumental in pranks such as hijacking internet destinations to cause images of Rick Astley to appear in place of their content. Also, coordinating attacks against other websites and internet users, exposing animal abuse, and posting threats of violence in other to elicit individual and public reactions.
Therefore, 4chan activity takes place on message boards and image boards. The site is split into categories: Japanese culture, interests, creative, adult (18+), other, and Misc (18+). However, it provides details for on-topic boards to discuss anime, manga technology and sport. Also, photography, music, hentai, torrents, travel, and physical fitness, as a random board. Therefore, the site originally hosts discussion boards on a separate domain called “world4ch”, but these were later moved to the dis.4chan.org sub domain. Furthermore, 4chan has had at least one employee, a programmer whom 4chan’s founder Christopher Poole met through online Tetris. All other moderators are volunteers.
In 20211, the /b/ (Random), /v/ (video games), /a/ (Anime and Manga), and /s/ (explicit images) boards were the site’s first, second, third, and fourth most popular boards respectively.
Why 4chan is important
First, 4chan is the original incubator for a large number of memes and behaviors that we now consider central to mainstream internet culture.
Secondly, the platform is responsible for some of the biggest hoaxes, cyber bullying incidents and internet pranks in previous years.
Thirdly, Anonymous got its start on 4chan with details- and the hacktivist collectives are an increasingly important player in news events. Therefore this is from Ferguson to the Steubenville rape. Particularly, the full list of things 4chan has given the internet would be very extensive if someone is paying for it. Therefore, here’s a start on the good:
- Lolcats: Funny pictures of cats with text superimposed on them.
- Dusty the cat: Abusing cat in Oklahoma whose they post their video to YouTube; 4chan tracked down the cat’s owner and sent his details to police.
- Advice animals: pictures of animals or human with stereotypical or archetypal captions superimposed.
- Rage comics: a genre of simple, line-drawn web comics- you probably recognize some its most familiar characters from memes.
- Rickrolling: the practice of sending someone a link that actually, secretly, links to the music video for Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up”.
- Chocolate Rain: 4chan users swarmed the music video for Tay Zonday’s “Chocolate Rain”, thereby moving it up the YouTube charts and transforming it into a veritable meme.
Rules of 4chan – Boards
There are a few rules they restrict users from violating in the U.S. law. This includes copyright law, and also from posting other people’s personal information, and using bots on the site. 4chan users can post racist, graphic and other “grotesque” material, but only on the board /b/. It has teams of referees it calls “moderators” and “janitors”, who can delete posts and ban users who post illegal content.
But also, 4chan is notoriously concern about who moderates it- and how much. 4chan sees that secrecy as part of its ethos. “There is no way for an end user to accurately judge the amount of moderation taking place at any given point in time.
But that doesn’t mean 4chan is inherently evil, or that everything about the site is bad. Basically, like Reddit platform or Hacker News or anything else, the good and the bad coexist.
Furthermore, users get message boards like /b/, which frequently traffic in gore and other shock porn. But you also get people talking about how their daily morning devotion went.
